Gillingham School Awards Evening

13 May 2013

Well done to the cricket team who won the national finals in which over 100 teams were entered.

Back in September  2012, the u17 cricket team took on Truro College, in the quarter final at Stalbridge CC, where Gillingham hit 177 with the bat [Webb 62, Hawkins 42]. Truro were unable to match the figure, falling 10 runs short with Ovenden and Calcott taking two wickets each. This led to the semi‐final being played the following day ‐ away to Dulwich College. With players arriving and being suitably impressed with the magnificent facilities and surroundings, Gillingham won the toss and elected to bat scoring a massive total of 236‐5 off 40 overs [Webb 89, Hawkins 63 and Calcott 31]. Dulwich could not keep up with the run rate and fell short by 84 runs, Barton and Ovenden taking three wickets each. This led to the final being played against the prestigious Shrewsbury School at Cumnor CC in Oxfordshire. Gillingham again won the toss and elected to bat, however after two overs, the nerves were starting to creep in with Webb and Gillatt losing early wickets in the first two overs. Fortunately, Hawkins 87, Cowley 33, and Calcott 31 put together a comprehensive total of 221‐8. Going into the field, one of the best displays of fielding that this team have produced along with some consistent bowling, meant that shrewsbury could only manage 198 off 40 overs with wickets coming from Barton, Cowley and Ovenden.

The cup was presented by Colin Fricker, at the sports awards evening on 9th May 2013 to captain Harry Hawkins, which is a member of fitness by design as are several of the team.

The club wishes them all the best for the next season.
